Indiana pool season is more limited than the Southern states so making sure that your pool deck and coping are properly sealed is important to extend your swim season as much as possible.  There can be several different materials next to each other that require mortar, caulking, and/or sealants of some sort.  We can also color match as needed to keep the appearance of the pool area as beautiful as the day it first opened.​

Tools of the Caulking Trade

• Caulking: A waterproof filler and sealant applied during the final sealing of the structure or when repairing a structure to prevent leaks from air or moisture, or pests from entering the building.  Caulk is normally applied with a caulking gun by the contractor and is applied to seal gaps, seams, and joints.  Caulk can be acrylic latex, vinyl latex, siliconized acrylic sealant, silicone, fireproof caulk, or one of several types of urethane based sealants depending upon the specific application.
• Backer Rod: If the contractor is tasked with sealing a large gap, a backer rod may be used.  This is a piece of foam that is rope-shaped and is inserted into the large gap before the caulk is applied.  The cells in the foam help to absorb the sealant and connect it with the surrounding surfaces.  Using a backer road helps the caulk stick all of the surfaces near the gap and provide a tight seal and it keeps the caulk from moving.​

• Grinder: When removing certain products before new caulk can be applied, a high-speed grinder is used.  The grinder also helps prepare the surface to be clean for the best adhesion of the new product.
• Caulking Gun: Several styles of caulking guns are available for commercial or residential caulking and waterproofing jobs.  From the inexpensive manual crank types most homeowners have seen to cordless variable speed commercial level guns. These high level caulking guns have flow-rate control and a clutch to release pressure for full control of the material bead.
• Safety Gear: Disturbing old materials can come at a risk.  Proper eyewear and safety masks should be used when the material composition is unknown.  The contractor should also use safety harnesses when working at heights.  The work often type requires sharp utility knives, scrapers, hammers, and chisels.  Safety gloves should be worn when using these tools.

• Dynamic joint - this joint is formed when there is material used that is subject to expansion and contraction.  
• Bedding joint - these are parallel between two surfaces that form planes but still need the surfaces bonded together to keep out air, water, and dirt.
